Electrical Regulations

Employers have a legal duty to comply with the standards set in the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. The regulations are required to take steps to minimise the risks to employees associated with the maintenance, servicing and installation of electrical systems and equipment.

If not properly controlled the use of electrical installations and equipment in the office can have serious consequences.

Fixed Wiring
An inspection and testing program of all fixed wiring circuits by a competent person (usually a specialist engineer) after which a certificate should be issued. Frequency of program 5 yearly.

Portable Appliances
General control measures should include a register to identify and control the movements of all portable electrical equipment. An inspection and testing program of all portable appliances by a competent person (usually a specialist engineer) after which a certificate should be issued. Frequency of program should be decided by risk assessment.
